An Af-Am McGruder family tree

Thanks to Jill Magruder Gatwood for sending this link. Ned Wynne McGruder and Maria McGruder were born in slavery at the turn of the 19th century. This family tree was created by two of their descendants, Wilmar McGruder and Kevin McGruder, from census records, family stories, and other sources. Check it out, and celebrate!

To all my Magruder cousins, especially the African-American ones:

My paternal grandfather Maurice Gray 1902-1961 of Tuxedo, MD (aka James McGee; he was a runaway from the same Baltimore St. Mary’s Industrial School attended by Babe Ruth) was a thoroughbred trainer noted for being kind to African-Americans on the race track during a segregated era. When I worked on the race track during the 1970s and 1980s, my grandfather’s African-American friends came up and told me stories about him.

Grandfather Gray was a close friend of Charlie Dressen (Jackie Robinson’s favorite baseball manager) and made the latter my Dad (F. Michael Gray)’s godson. My Dad got to meet Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella and the rest of the early 1950s Brooklyn Dodgers made famous by Roger Kahn’s book, THE BOYS OF SUMMER. My brothers and I got to meet Dressen in 1965 and 1966 when he turned the mediocre Detroit Tigers into a contending team that won the 1968 World Series after his 1966 death.
